organic and fairtrade fashion

'armedangels' (cologne, germany) is a fashion label that combines style and ethics. it creates stylish fashion made with
:: an uncompromising rejection of child labor, wage exploitation and environmental pollution. ::
everythings @ 'armedangels' is made from 100% organic cotton and manufactured under 'fair trade' standards. the best is they donate part of the money to the charity 'read india' in pratham/india that helps kids to learn writing and reading.

the same is true for santa monica (ca) based label 'social awearness'. they also follow the philosophy organic, fair trade, no sweat shops, ...

:: if we all do a little today, it will have a huge impacts on tomorrow ::

i couldn't agree more...

improving bike safety ... by using a responsive jacket

one of the little concrete*monsters will get a new bike this friday... i found this nice idea to add more safety (visibility) to the biking fun::

design student michael chen (uk) came up with a concept for a (safety) jacket he calls reactiv.
:: i cycled round london for hours in the dark wearing my first prototype - a £10 waterproof jacket with LEDs stuck on by gaffer tape, :: he said. :: for the first time, i noticed that cars passed me more slowly, gave me more room, and that the drivers and passengers were even making eye contact. ::

the design has won a 'james dyson award' in 2008 from the dyson foundation that's dedicated to inspirating design innovation. (you know, the company that makes the stylish vacuum cleaners!)

:: michael was inspired by the 'nintendo wii' to come up with reactiv - a responsive cycling jacket.
the jacket uses an accelerometer that senses movement to change the colour of the LEDs in the back from green (accelerating) to red (braking). it has amber LEDs in the arms which are activated by a tilt switch behind the elbow. these light up when the arm is lifed, indicating the cyclist is about to turn.
reactiv allows the cyclist to communicate their intentions to other travellers and thus it will hopefully reduce the 20,000 incidents involving cyclists on london's roads every year.
british judges were impressed by the simplicity and effectiveness of michael's design. ::

'lumibaer' (a glowing bear) lamp

if you like gummibears this would be the perfect light source for you! i like the white upright one, about 23 inches tall. they are already 10 years old, but still very cool like at the day they were 'born'!

they started as lamps for kids room, but ended as cult design items.
in five different colors (white, blue, yellow-orange, red, green)

black friday:: my first + my last

sounds sad? not really ...

we've been living in the u.s. now for 6 years + never made it to experience the black friday ... why in the hell do they actually call it black friday ... probably because all the retail stores and credit card companies make a lot of profit!?
now that we know we are going to live in europe in a few weeks, we HAD TO go out to see, what all the fuzz is about... and yes, it's crazy... as if someone unexpectedly announced tomorrow would be christmas ... i didn't even know so many people actually fit in that tiny mall ... and can carry that many bags ... in fact we went to only one store carrying clothes that are cult in europe ... everyone got one treat or two or ... i got one of those sweat pants with the big label + t-shirts, little girl got two dresses (to turn while dancing), the boys ended up with a bunch of t-shirts, and the best is - we got x-mas presents for 4 other family members ... sounds like a really big price ticket, well since we earn in euro soon it was actually a bargain shopping spree + that stuff is worth twice what we spend over there and our beloved will be very (i mean VERY) happy about their presents from santa this year... well and i'm happy too, but i have to say:: i prefer every other day for shopping over black friday ...

my 'freitag' bag is coming!

they have an incredible deal on specific 'dragnet' bags by 'freitag' @ 'yoox'::
15% off on bags and shoes (until Nov 4) + 'yoox' coupon code 'pp@yoox' to get an additional 5% discount and free shipping on entire online order (until Nov 30). this is a steal for a 'freitag' bag!

:: 'dragnet' are the original individual recycled freeway bags, sturdy, stable, unique and highly versatile. handmade from used materials, these are bags that always appear in different print designs and colors, hence a new look every time.
each bag is as unique as its owner and meets the highest standards of quality design and sturdiness. they are extendable in two steps and come equipped with an inner and outer pocket as well as a hip belt for urbane frequent bikers. the innovative design extends even to the packaging that converts into a play TV. ::

'freitag' bags are entirely made from recycled materials - used, exhaust-stained truck tarpaulins, the inner tubes of bicycle tires, old car safety belts and air-bags.

i pay only $138 ... i'm so excited and can't wait for the 4-8 business days ... the bag is for me, the play TV (the package) is for the kids. so, i don't really feel that bad to spend so much money on a used bag. ;-)

see also my older 'post' about their flagship store made out of recycled containers.

happy 'trick-or-treater'

i made two kids happy with 'customer requested' hand-made costumes ... and they got a lot of prizes for them ... you should see the pile of candy ... we had to empty their bags twice as they were getting to heavy for the little trick-or-treaters ...

'the observer' (uk):: 'child sweatshop shame threatens Gap's ethical image'

news from 'the observer' (u.k.)
:: ... the discovery of the sweatshop has the potential to cause major embarrassment for 'gap'. last week, a spokesman admitted that children appeared to have been caught up in the production process and rather than risk selling garments made by children it vowed it would withdraw tens of thousands of items identified by 'the observer' ... ::
